The German government has approved a draft law that will allow sexual violence in conflict zones to be prosecuted as a war crime and a crime against humanity. The law will expand the definition of war crimes to include sexual assault, sexual enslavement, and forced pregnancy termination. The aim is to give victims the opportunity to actively participate in criminal trials as co-plaintiffs. The legislation was prompted by reports of sexual assault since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
