India to add $5bn aircraft carrier to fleet to counter China

India is set to acquire its second indigenous aircraft carrier, worth around $4.8 billion, to counter China's naval presence in the Indian Ocean region. The Defense Acquisition Council, led by defense minister Rajnath Singh, is expected to approve the acquisition on Friday. The new carrier will accommodate at least 28 fighter jets and helicopters, displacing 45,000 tons of water. It will be equipped with French Rafale jets. India's first homemade carrier, INS Vikrant, joined the fleet last year.
